Veterans' Day

Veterans Day is a holiday that is observed on November 11. It originated as "Armistice Day" in 1926 to commemorate the signing of the armistice which ended World War I on November 11, 1918. It was renamed "Veterans Day" on June 1, 1954 by President Eisenhower to honor veterans of all wars.

Concepts to be Taught:

  1. Conflicts among children as they compare to conflicts among nations. Sometimes the motivation can be the same, such as jealousy of ones's possessions, land, etc.
  2. Peace is a wonderful thing to celebrate.

Extended Activities:

If you were a ruler of your own brand new country, what flag would you make? Have children draw and design their own flags.

Make/Draw a dove and olive branch to symbolize peace.
